Description
In this 6-week course you will learn or renew many techniques to paint with watercolors. Using my reference photos, students will follow along with me as we create beautiful watercolor paintings step by step. Classes cover basic and unique
approaches to various challenges faced when creating two-dimensional artwork. Some techniques will be color mingling and mixing, glazing, pouring, spattering,
how to fix mistakes, unusual tools to paint with and much more!
Materials List
Students must bring:
Paper
- 1 Pad of Arches – Watercolor, cold pressed, 140 Ib. 100% cotton paper pad, 9×12 or larger, 12 sheets. You could also use a full sheet of paper or block, 11×15.
Brushes
- I use larger round and flat brushes, please bring a variety so you can learn to use them for different techniques. Rounds, #12 or #10, and #8 or #6, flat 1″ to ¼”, small mop, and a rigger or striper.
Paints
I use higher-grade paints such as Winsor Newton, M. Graham, and Daniel Smith, but you can use less expensive brands such as Cotman that will also work. Here is a list of colors | have in my palette: these are all not mandatory, but some like to know what l use. (If you are new to watercolor and are limited, you can get by with the starred colors.)
- Winsor Yellow (Hansa Yellow) *
- New Gamboge *
- Quinacridone Gold
- Raw Sienna or Yellow Ochre
- Burnt Sienna (Winsor Newton) Winsor Red, Pyrrol Red or Cadmium Red
- Permanent or Quinacridone Rose *
- Alizarin Crimson *
- Cobalt Blue
- Ultramarine Blue * Phthalo Blue (Winsor Blue Red Shade) *
- Phthalo Green (Winsor Green Blue Shade)
Other
- Plastic palette with large wells to hold and mix paints or white ceramic plate.
- Light Plywood or Gatorboard to hold paper if bought in sheets 12″x 15″ Masking tape to secure paper to board
- Graphite or transfer paper
- 2 Water containers
- Paper towels or cloth towels
- Old bath towel to cover the table.
- Sketchbook, pencil and kneaded eraser to sketch and take notes
