Transform how you see and paint by concentrating on effective values. Paint a reference value scale and learn how to paint layers of trees on a preprinted practice sheet. With step-by- step instruction, focus on values by glazing with multiple watercolor layers of Paynes Gray to create your misty fog practice painting. Have fun lifting out wispy fog in the hills, trees and shoreline. Then glaze more layers of
water ripples to complete your painting. Please join us!

Materials List
Students must bring:
- Watercolor tube paints: Winsor Newton Paynes Gray (Other brands are ok, but color formulas will be different. Davy’s Gray does not work well for the value ranges.)
- Watercolor paper: Arches 140# cold- pressed watercolor paper, one piece cut to an 11% x 15% size
- Scraps of Arches 140# cold- pressed watercolor paper for color testing
- Backing board large enough to tape the Arches 140# cold-pressed watercolor paper to (examples: Gator board or acrylic scrap board or foamcore board wrapped with contact paper or an old cutting board)
- Mixing tray: your palette lid or butcher tray or white plastic plates
Water containers, one for rinse water and one for clean water. - Watercolor brushes: a ½” flat synthetic brush and bring all your rounds sizes #2, #4, #6, #7 (synthetic and any combination synthetic/squirrel) to audition for painting various tree shapes. (Round brushes don’t need to have fine points.)
- Optional: bring your larger flat brushes, synthetic and combination synthetic/squirrel, if you have them.
- X-acto knife
- Paper towels and one box of facial tissues (avoid “ultra-soft” tissue because of lotion; doesn’t work with watercolor)
- Masking tape and roll of toilet paper (to wrap with paper towel to control water)
- Pencil and white plastic eraser
- Removable adhesive putty (used for hanging posters, I like “Uhu” brand available at Art Stores)
- 18″ Ruler or a 12″ ruler and a straight edge 15″ or longer (we will be drawing pencil reference lines on our painting.)
- Brush care: “The Master’s” Brush Cleaner
- Optional: eye dropper to add water to watercolor mixes
- And please bring your lunch and beverage. Microwave and fridge are available. Complementary coffee and tea are provided by KAA. We will eat lunch in the classroom. More time to paint!
