It is Keizer Art Association's privilege and distinct pleasure to honor Janna Curtis as our Artist of the month. Janna is an accomplished and recognized fabric artist, and valued member of Keizer Art Association.

I remember as a child playing under the quilt frames as my mom and her friends would tie a quilt for a new baby or a bridal shower. I got my first sewing machine in middle school, a Sears Kenmore, and attempted to make clothes. Fabric has been in my veins since a young age.

I dabbled in quilting over the years, making a few quilts when and if circumstance allowed. However, I started my quilting journey in earnest the year my daddy died. I wanted to make a family photo quilt for my mom. It was a basic attempt but one that my mom treasured. I guess the quilting bug hit me intensely after that. I joined groups, took classes, made quilts for our daughter’s teachers, and won blue ribbons at the State Fair. It is always fun trying a new technique, and there is always a new technique!

I have joined several quilting groups and have gone on many a retreat. Lately, my interest in art quilts piqued after seeing a show in Brookings, Oregon and happened to come across a venue of small art quilts. I was fascinated! I chatted with one of the presenters and immediately fell in love with the idea. I bought the recommended book and offered this as a monthly challenge to my local quilt group and for the past year we have been focusing on a specific theme each month.
