Description
Use a wax resist technique with watercolors to create a batik effect. First we will create an outline on our translucent Ginwashi paper using a waterproof black pen, then safely melt and apply the wax, then color in our subject with watercolors in an iterative process: wax, color, more wax, more color… When we are done, we will iron out the wax between sheets of newspaper, leaving just our design on the paper, ready to mount.
Materials List
Students must bring:
- Professional- or artist-grade watercolors (a small set in primary colors of your choosing will work fine)
- Watercolor paint brushes (such as a #6 or #8 round and a 1-inch flat or bright and whatever other shapes/sizes you prefer)
- A palette for mixing colors
- A water cup
- Paper towels
- About 40 newspaper sheets for ironing out the wax
- A small box of Kleenex
- Optional: Bring your own subject inspiration (about 9 × 12 inches)
Instructor will provide:
- Wax and supplies to apply the wax
- Ginwashi paper
- Black micron pen
- Wax paper
- Freezer paper
- Subject references (Students may trace their designs if they wish, so no previous drawing experience is necessary.)
- Optional: The loan of a watercolor kit with professional colors and brushes is available for a fee of $15.
